Discovered in , the Mountaineer Archaeological Site consists of more than sixty clusters of prehistoric artifacts on top of Tenderfoot Mountain near Gunnison. The most significant discovery at the site has been structures dating to the Paleo-Indian period — BCE and associated with the Folsom tradition.
The structures indicate more extensive Folsom use of the mountains than was previously thought, suggesting that the core of Folsom settlement in Colorado could have been in the mountains rather than on the plains. In the Mountaineer Site was first recorded as a lithic scatter during surveys for the construction of cell-phone towers and other facilities on Tenderfoot Mountain.
In the top of the mountain was surveyed and mapped, resulting in the discovery of more than fifteen clusters of artifacts, including parts of twenty Folsom fluted points.

Two mountaineers scaling Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, on Thursday discovered the frozen body of a climber who disappeared there 32 years ago. The body was identified as Patrice Hyvert, an aspiring mountain guide who was last seen alive on March 1, , when he set off for a solo climb, Le Dauphine reported. Shortly after his disappearance, another climber was rescued by helicopter near the same peak, but rescuers were unable to find Patrice.
Officials believe the lowered visibility may have caused Patrice to fall into a crevasse near the glacier where he was found. Gerard says has mixed emotions about the discovery of his son. For Patrice, the mountain was his home. This was an environment I introduced to him at the age of 7 to 8 years old. He climbed Mont Blanc with me at 13 years old. The mountain was his passion, he was going to become a guide. In that way, it was better for him to rest in the mountains than in a coffin.
View Missing Climber’s Route in a larger map A map shows Patrice’s initial route and where his body was ultimately discovered. A funeral will be held July 17 to honor the memory of Patrice. He will be cremated and his ashes will be spread in the same spot where his body was found on the Talefre glacier, Le Figaro reported. This comes months after a tragedy on Mount Everest underscored the dangers of mountain climbing.

Born in Cheshire , Mallory was introduced to rock climbing and mountaineering as a student at Winchester College. After the war, he returned to Charterhouse before resigning to take part in the British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition. During the expedition , Mallory and his climbing partner, Andrew “Sandy” Irvine , disappeared on the north-east ridge of the Everest. Mallory’s ultimate fate was unknown for 75 years, until his body was discovered on 1 May by an expedition that had set out to search for the climbers’ remains.
Whether Mallory and Irvine had reached the summit before they died remains a subject of speculation and continuing research. Mallory was born in Mobberley , Cheshire , the son of Herbert Leigh Mallory — , a clergyman who changed his surname from Mallory to Leigh-Mallory in

The sound of a rock climber falling from a cliff cut through the black, cold silence of the early morning hours in Yosemite National Park. World-renowned climber Alex Honnold could not see the commotion above him, but he could hear the sound of a body banging into jagged rocks, and it gave him a picture of what was unfolding. His climbing partner, Emily Harrington, of Colorado, had slipped on the first pitch, or segment, of what was planned as a daylong ascent of the granite face of El Capitan on Sunday.
He put tension on the ropes he had been holding to support Harrington and ensure that she did not fall off the cliff if an accident occurred, a technique known as belay. Then he handed the rope to another member of the support team and began climbing. Then Honnold and the support crew called Yosemite Search and Rescue for help. Honnold said he told stories to distract Harrington and to keep her awake during the two hours they waited for the rescue team to arrive.
Harrington, 33, a five-time national champion in sport climbing, was taken to a hospital in Fresno, Honnold said. In an Instagram post Monday, Harrington reassured people she was not seriously injured. He knows this firsthand: Years ago, he nearly died on Half Dome when he went off-route. Ballinger, known for guiding climbers on Mount Everest, did not immediately return a call on Tuesday.
